Multicultural Lit – Sept. 9 and 10

  1. Begin with 20 minutes of independent reading.
  2. Begin work on the assignment I distributed and reviewed yesterday.
    • Please remember that this is a 100-point assignment, and it should be taken seriously and completed.
  3. Thursday 9/9: Media Center computers. This is your only day with access to school computers, so don’t play and waste time.
  4. Absent? Look on the desk where I put the assignments. Your name should be on a document.
  5. Using the computers, look up the vocabulary for the article “How the Civil War Created College Football”
    • DO NOT use Google for vocabulary
    • Thesaurus.com OR Dictionary.com
  6. This work will not take two full class periods, but it will be turned in before you leave class on FRIDAY, Aug. 10
    • Remember: no late work accepted if you were present in class on Friday.
    • You can finish this work in one day if you stay focused and committed to it. So, if you are absent on Thursday, you still have to turn it in on Friday, finished or not.
    • Be sure to bring a note to excuse your absence if you are absent on Friday and miss the submission date.
  7. When finished with the football article, work on the grammar worksheets.
  8. With your reflection essay and other writing, I found that there was a substantial issue with pronoun/antecedent agreement and comma usage.
    • Pronouns must agree in gender and number. Be sure to READ the examples and rules at the top of each page.
    • Pronouns must have an antecedent. Remember that a pronoun replaces a noun, so you must have a noun earlier in the sentence (antecedent: ante – is a prefix meaning before) for the pronoun to replace.
    • Commas are used with a conjunction when you have TWO independent clauses/simple sentences combined into one sentence.
    • In other words, you need a SUBJECT and VERB / comma and conjunction / a second SUBJECT and VERB
    • See the example I annotated on the worksheet.
